How Do I Start To Plan A Wedding?

How do I start to plan a wedding? I hear you ask. Congratulations, you’re engaged, how exciting! So what’s next? Pinterest boards? Instagram seaching? Outfit shopping? Yes and no is the answer – confusing? absolutely! Wedding planning can be overwhelming, but don’t worry, we’ve got you!

The first few days or weeks after you get engaged are a whirlwind of congratulations and living in a bubble of happiness. And of listening to everyone else’s opinions on what you should do for your wedding!

It’s YOUR wedding!

I belong to quite a few Facebook wedding groups, and I’m quite frankly shocked by the attitudes of some people. Everyone seems to have an opinion on what you should or shouldn’t have/do. At the end of the day, it’s YOUR wedding, not theirs. Do you want to have a festival style wedding outdoors with cracking views and a relaxed vibe? Or a winter wonderland style on Christmas Eve? Perhaps an all in one ceremony and reception at a large corporate hotel? Your wedding should reflect your style and you as a couple.

Budget

Sorry, no!

A bit of tough love here at this point. Your budget is absolutely one of the first things you need to look at. I wrote another blog post on Budgeting For Your Wedding which you can read here. You’ve heard the phrase “champagne tastes on a beer budget”? You need to know what you can afford and where the money’s coming from.

Research, Mood Boards & Shopping Around

NOW can I head over to Pinterest and Insta?! Absolutely! Once you know how much money you have at your disposal and where it’s going the exciting stuff starts. Start looking at things that both fit with your style and your budget. Seen something you love but can’t afford? Is there a way of achieving it on a budget that doesn’t look cheap? Enjoy the process!

Wedding planning does NOT need to be stressful! Have fun researching and planning. Very importantly, don’t lose sight of you and your partner as a couple. After all, your partnership is why you’re doing all this planning, right? Don’t let the planning process completely take over your lives, go on date nights still. Have evenings where you don’t talk weddings at all, and keep that connection to each other.
